After completing 6 months of Lupron Depot® therapy, your hormone levels will start returning to normal. This can have an effect on your menstrual cycle, as well as on any side effects you may have experienced during therapy.
Symptom relief
Many women experienced 12 months of relief from symptoms, such as pelvic pain and pelvic tenderness, after 6 months of therapy. Of course, individual results may vary.
Your menstrual cycle
For most women, menstrual periods return 2 months after stopping treatment with Lupron Depot. If your period has not returned after 3 months, talk with your doctor.
Your side effects
If you have been having side effects typical of low estrogen levels, they generally subside gradually once treatment is completed.
If your pain returns
If your symptoms return after you stop using Lupron Depot, your doctor can prescribe an additional 6 months of treatment along with add-back therapy. Add-back therapy is a pill (norethindrone acetate 5 mg daily) that adds back low levels of a hormone without interfering with the effectiveness of Lupron Depot. It significantly reduces the bone density loss associated with the use of Lupron Depot. It can also help reduce hot flashes.
